Earth Day is a time to reflect on our impact on the planet and what we can do to reduce it. Here at Nortek Air Solutions, we’ve implemented various green initiatives in our manufacturing plants to promote sustainability and reduce our carbon footprint.

One of the ways we promote sustainability is by encouraging employees to carpool, with designated parking spaces for carpoolers. By reducing the number of cars on the road, we can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help to improve air quality. In addition, we encourage employees to use reusable water bottles, coffee cups, and dishware, which can help reduce the amount of plastic waste generated in the workplace.

Nortek Air Solutions is also committed to recycling in the breakroom, as well as recycling cardboard and plastic from the manufacturing plants. By recycling materials, we’re helping reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills and ultimately helping to conserve natural resources.

Another unique initiative that our Aston facility has implemented is a plant cutting bar. This program, which just celebrated its one-year anniversary, encourages employees to exchange plant cuttings with others, for their home gardens and houseplants. This promotes a sense of community within the workplace.

Chris Pelican, Recycling Supervisor for the Nortek Air Solutions’ Tualatin, Oregon facility, recommends being diligent and consistent in our efforts to be more sustainable. "If we keep all the small stuff clean and organized, it makes big things easier to handle," he says. "Recycling is common sense to me," he adds. "If something is clean the majority of the time it will be healthier and happier. I like things when healthy and happy, so I try and do what I can to help in this effort." That commitment helped the Tualatin, Oregon facility earn the Washington County Oregon Green Business Leaders Green Business Certification this year, its sixth year earning that distinction.

Everyone has a role to play in promoting sustainability and reducing our impact on the planet. Whether it’s through reducing waste or conserving resources, we can all make a difference. As we celebrate Earth Day, let’s take inspiration from our colleagues like Chris and commit to doing our part to protect the planet for future generations.
